This tiny orchestral fanfare was written at the request of Marcus Davey (Artistic Director, Norfolk & Norwich Festival) for a work to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first performance of Elgar’s Sea Pictures. A chordal motive moves upwards through the orchestra, at first as if under water but soon emerging above the waves. I haven’t quoted Elgar; instead there is a partially submerged reference or two to another composer’s sea-related work.
