Colin Matthews

Composer

He has … brought musical architectronics to a personal pitch of mastery.

— Paul Driver, The Sunday Times

Two Tributes (1998-9). Ensemble

i. Little Continuum
ii. Elegeia

The Continuum is a 90th birthday present for Elliott Carter, an attempt to encapsulate some of the energy of a remarkable man (‘little’ because it forms part of my larger Continuum, completed in 2000).

Chris van Kampen was one of the first professional musicians I met, in 1968; a piece of mine for the Nash Ensemble, Elegiac Chaconne, was the last new work he played, shortly before his death in September 1997. As a tribute to him, I have recomposed it for a much larger ensemble, although the cello remains silent. Chris’s musicianship and his commitment to new music were beyond praise.

The Two Tributes were composed as a gift to the London Sinfonietta who gave the first performance under Oliver Knussen in 2000.
