Colin Matthews

Composer

It is fascinating how Matthews can use, almost entirely, dark and subtly shifting colours …

— David Denton, Tempo

Second Hand Flames (1982). SSATB

The music of Second Hand Flames is freely derived from the chorus parts of Scriabin’s Prometheus (1911).  There is no text: the vowel sounds are derived from the same source.  Second Hand Flames was commissioned for the London Sinfonietta Voices by the Bath Festival Society with assistance from South West Arts, and was first performed at the Bath Festival in May 1982.
