Colin Matthews

Composer

The writing is energetic, skilful, imaginative, and organic, as Matthews’ music always is …

— Stephen Pettitt, The Times

Paraphrases (2023). Violin and Piano.

i Flowing
ii Vivo
iii Molto sostenuto

Titles are often both hard to come by and hard to explain. To paraphrase is to put something into different words and applying it to music could mean using existing music in a different way. But what I intended here, at least in the relatively large scale first movement, is to describe a set of continuous variations which flow almost as if improvised. The brief second movement continues this process, rather aggressively, while the more extended slow third movement is much more lyrical.

I composed Paraphrases as a thank you to Leila Josefowicz for the many fine performances she has given of my Violin Concerto since 2009.

First performed on 25/06/25 by Leila Josefowicz and Huw Waktins at Snape Maltings Concert Hall during the Aldeburgh Festival.
