Mussorgsky’s brief comic opera, “The Marriage”, is based on a play by Nikolai Gogol, and dates from 1868. Like much of the composer’s output he left the project incomplete and only in piano reduction.
This orchestration of the opera by Colin Matthews and Oliver Knussen was first performed at the Bloomsbury Theatre, London by Nexus Opera and Divertimenti under Lionel Friend in December 1981.
