Mendelssohn’s Songs Without Words… arranged (in 2010) by Colin Matthews … lent a timbral incisiveness dispelling all thoughts of the parlour piano. One Song was an allegro agitato quasi – first movement, another an adagio, a third a presto. Why not, one wondered, a finale, too, to make a quartet by other means? Or at least a match with Mendelssohn’s own Four Pieces’? Even so, Matthews has contrived a delectable addition to the repertory.
