Mechaniks Bench and Mechaniks Bench 2 were both commissioned by COMA (then Contemporary Music Making for Amateurs, now CMM for All) in 2002. Mechaniks Bench 2 is the same music as the original but with an Introduction and Coda added.
The instrumentation for both pieces is flexible but the following is a guide:
A : flute, oboe, clarinet, violin
B : oboe, clarinet, trumpet (muted), violin, viola
C : bassoon, horn, trombone (muted), viola, cello
D : bassoon, trombone (muted), tuba, cello, bass
Piano
Percussion (at least two)
Metronomes (at least four)
The duration of the piece is also variable – there are some rather complicated instructions to follow!
