Colin Matthews

Composer

Matthews, like Britten, has the gift of creating crisply memorable material …

— Edward Greenfield, The Guardian

Margaret’s Galliard (2002). Ms Cookhorn’s Fancie (2004). Contrabassoon

Margaret’s Galliard (after William Byrd) and Ms Cookhorn’s Fancie (after Giles Farnaby) were written in 2002 and 2003 for Margaret Cookhorn, contrabassoonist of the BCMG and CBSO. Margaret first performed them both at a BCMG concert at the CBSO Centre in Birmingham in March 2004.

I first met Margaret at the Royal Northern College in 1985 when she played in a student performance of Suns Dance – she attacked me with her contrabassoon for having written such a difficult part!
