Colin Matthews

Composer

He has … brought musical architectronics to a personal pitch of mastery.

— Paul Driver, The Sunday Times

Dowlandia (1995-7). 15 players

  1. Mr Gillinson’s Galiarda (Dr John Bull)
  2. Mr Finnissy’s Gigg (Mr William Byrd)
  3. Mr Payne His Galliard (on the air ‘Old Crumbly’) (John Dowland)
  4. Sir John’s Galliard (John Dowland)
  5. Master William’s Fancie (Mr William Byrd)

These arrangements of dances, all from around 1600, were made between 1995 and 1997 as birthday presents for friends and colleagues, and in the case of the last one, to celebrate the birth of Mark Anthony Turnage’s first son (although it didn’t arrive until his first birthday).  Some depart more from the originals than others, but all are clearly recognisable.
