This song was written by Britten for a 1937 radio play by W.H. Auden, Hadrian’s Wall, but the music was lost until one of the performers produced a copy of the vocal line in 2005. I devised a piano accompaniment which was reproduced in Charlotte Higgins’ book Under Another Sky, and subsequently recorded by NMC, who released it as a free download in Britten’s centenary year, 2013.
