I orchestrated about half of Beethoven’s ‘Rule Britannia’ Piano Variations in 1980 for Carl Davis’ score for the 1927 Abel Gance silent movie Napoleon – a scene showing the British fleet off Toulouse. In 1997 Carl asked me to orchestrate the rest of the Variations for a performance he gave with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in Kerkrade, Netherlands.
