April Sunshine was commissioned by the London Sinfonietta for Notes to the New Government. In May 2015, the weekend after the general election, the London Sinfonietta premiered 16 songs by composers considering the society they hope to see. The song reflects on the value of the arts, with words by writer Jackie Kay.
