Continuum, a 40 minute work for mezzo-soprano and ensemble of 23 players, was commissioned by the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group for Cynthia Clarey and Simon Rattle for a tour in autumn 2000, with performances in London, Cologne, Brussels, Amsterdam, Vienna and Birmingham. It was performed at the 2021 Aldeburgh Festival, again with the BCMG and Cynthia Clarey but with Sakari Oramo conducting. In 2003 the Avanti Ensemble played it at Porvoo (the Avanti Summer Festival) with Riika Rantanen and Hannu Lintu, and again in 2004 at the Berlin Festival. In 2005 and 2006 Esa-Pekka Salonen conducted it with Janice Felty in Los Angeles and Chicago.
On the 20th anniversary of its eleventh and (so far) last performance I was happy to be sent an interview with the journalist Bruce Duffle which took place in Chicago in January 2006.
