Arranging Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony for piano trio is not something I ever expected to do, but when Emmanuel Ax, Leonidas Kavakos and Yo-Yo Ma ask for it you can hardly say no! It was a big challenge, but ideal for a lockdown project towards the end of 2020; and I was encouraged by the fact that they would include the arrangement of the Second Symphony by Ferdinand Ries, which Beethoven approved. They recorded both symphonies last year, and the CD is just out on Sony Classics.
