A new website, and a birthday that feels as though it should still be a long way off. I’ve reached an age that many of the composers that mean the most to me never approached – Berg, Britten, Debussy, Mahler, Ravel, Scriabin, not to mention nearly all the significant composers of the nineteenth century. But at least I can think gratefully of Elliott Carter, with the potential of not writing my first opera for another 20 years…
The website is a work in progress which will be gradually added to and updated – many more photographs to come, and I have to track down huge numbers of missing programme notes, and of course there will be some music before long – although in the interim there’s a fair amount available at NMC (don’t visit the site without buying something by somebody else!) or through YouTube (who I believe actually pay a token amount for the privilege).
And I hope to write a regular blog here, or preferably get others to contribute something, or point in the direction of things that interest me – a good starting point might be an interview done for Sinfini last year – or from 10 years ago, but not hopelessly outdated.
I remain luddite enough to have no presence on social media, so this is likely to remain the only interface that I’ll maintain – fingers crossed that it won’t be too intermittent!
